Apple has long waged war against sideloading of applications on iOS devices. They’ve taken about every single step they could to wall off their garden as much as possible and prevent users from installing applications from anywhere other than the official AppStore.
In light of the new European laws that discourage monopolies on digital application stores, Apple is forced to rethink its stance on sideloading, at least in Europe, however, ever since the beginning of iOS, hackers and enthusiasts have found ways to install whatever they please on their devices. This kind of freedom is what jailbreaking stands for.
For years one of the most popular ways to sideload an iOS application to the phone was using Cydia Impactor, a tool developed by Cydia’s author, saurik, for Windows, macOS, and Linux. This method worked for years until Apple changed something in the backend which broke Cydia Impactor for free Apple Developer accounts. this is when developer Riley Testut released AltStore, a new way to sideload and install iOS apps from third-party sources.
What is AltStore?
AltStore is an iOS application that allows you to quickly sideload and install iOS apps in the .IPA file format on your device, even if those apps are not available in the official AppStore. AltStore uses your computer and a program called AltServer to sign and deploy the apps to your phone and keeps them refreshed when you are connected to the same WiFi as your computer.
Apple has introduced limitations to how long you can use free developer account-installed apps. This limit is 7 days, after which the app expires and it’s not usable anymore. To get around this, AltStore allows you to refresh your apps even if they already expired. It also shows you how many days you have left before the app expires.
While this whole expiration ordeal is annoying, it’s the best we can get at the moment without spending $100/ year for a paid Apple Developer account (those can sign apps for up to 1 year).
What are AltStore Repos?
If you’ve ever been jailbroken, you probably know what repos are. You add a link to your AltStore, and then you can download whatever they make available on that repo right from your app. For jailbreak, it’s tweaks, while for AltStore it’s applications that you cannot find on the official AppStore.
The repos are maintained by various developers in the community and they provide various apps that you can quickly sideload to your device. In this article, we are taking a look at the top 20 best AltStore sources and repos you should add in 2023.
