Can I jailbreak iOS 17.3.1 on my device?
As the jailbreaking community is always changing, new jailbreak utilities are released often.
You may find out that a new jailbreak was released for your device long after the iOS version you are running has stopped being signed.
I highly recommend checking our Jailbreak Tools for All iOS Versions page which details the available jailbreak utilities for all iOS versions and is updated every time a new tool is released.
Here’s the current iOS 17.3.1 jailbreak support:
If you have one of these devices:
- iPad (6th generation) (A10)
- iPad (7th generation) (A10)
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation) (A10X)
- iPad Pro 10.5-inch (A10X)
You can jailbreak these devices today with PaleRa1n jailbreak on iOS 17.3.1. Tweaks do work and you can install Sileo and even have SSH. It’s technically iPadOS 17.3.1 but it’s mostly the same thing.
If you have any other device running iOS 17.3.1:
- No jailbreak utility is available for A12+ devices on iOS 17.3.1 at the moment. Only the iPad models mentioned above can have a jailbreak on iOS 17.3.1 currently.
- There’s currently no kernel exploit for iOS 17.3.1 on A12+.
- TrollStore is compatible only up to iOS 17.0, not iOS 17.3.1.
How to Jailbreak iOS 17.3.1?
If you do happen to be lucky enough to have one of the compatible devices that run iPadOS 17.3.1 / iOS 17.3.1 and still run PaleRa1n, you can easily jailbreak your device using a few simple steps.
Please follow the instructions below to jailbreak iOS 17.3.1:
- Connect your iOS 17.3.1 device to your computer using a USB cable. Make sure the device is unlocked and on the Home Screen.
- Download palera1n from GitHub Releases over here. Make sure you get the correct macOS or Linux architecture. There’s no Windows version.
- Once downloaded, open Terminal, type chmod +x, leave a space, and then drag and drop the downloaded PaleRa1n jailbreak file into Terminal to get its path. Press Enter.
- ALTERNATIVE: Instead of downloading PaleRa1n manually, you may run the official install script in Terminal: sudo /bin/sh -c “$(curl -fsSL https://static.palera.in/scripts/install.sh)” then simply type palera1n and press Enter.
- Now drag and drop the PaleRa1n file again in Terminal and press Enter. PaleRa1n should run and put your device in Recovery Mode.
- When you are ready, press Enter again to follow the DFU mode procedure. PaleRa1n will tell you how to enter DFU mode by pressing the Power Button + Volume Down in a certain order.
- Once the device is in DFU mode (black screen), PaleRa1n will detect it and automatically begin the jailbreak procedure.
- Wait for the phone to fully boot to the Home Screen then look for the PaleRa1n app and open it.
- Inside the PaleRa1n app, tap Sileo or Zebra and install one of these package managers. I use Sileo.
That’s it. You should know that during the jailbreak procedure, the device will reboot several times. You may see an Apple logo with a chess icon on top of it and a lot of text scrolling on the screen.
This is all normal, and you don’t have to do anything until it boots. During the Sileo installation, you may be asked for a root password. You can set here whatever password you want, just make sure you remember it.
For years, the default root password was “alpine” so I keep using that for SSH. Probably not the best idea, but my devices rarely run SSH only via USB for safety.
Once Sileo is fully installed, you will be able to install tweaks and themes from repos such as Havoc Repo, BigBoss Repo, Chariz, Packix, and so on.
Is PaleRa1n Jailbreak for iOS 17.3.1 rootless?
Yes, PaleRa1n Jailbreak is using the rootless architecture. All iOS 15+ jailbreaks use the rootless architecture because of SSV (Signed System Volume), a security feature added by Apple that would otherwise panic and bootloop the device if we mess with it.
Rootless jailbreaks are not weaker. Most people will not even see the difference. The actual change involves where the jailbreak files are placed on the system.
Most rootless jailbreaks do not remount the Root File System (System partition) so the jailbreak files are placed in /var/jb/ which is part of the User Partition.
These jailbreaks still have root and tweaks still can run with root privileges. Do not confuse the root user/root privileges with the Root File System, it’s not the same thing.
PaleRa1n, just like Dopamine Jailbreak, is a capable jailbreak utility that successfully manages to get tweaks working on iOS 17. The rootless architecture is just the new normal and it doesn’t make the jailbreak less powerful, even though some tweaks may not be updated for rootless.
