Package Managers like PurePKG, Sileo, and Cydia are an important part of a jailbreak. They allow you to browse repositories, and find tweaks, themes, and utilities, and then they provide the means to install these tweaks in an elegant, easy-to-use interface.
Over the years there have been quite a few package managers released, but Cydia and Sileo are the most popular, most well-known of them.
It’s not unusual to see people claiming that a jailbreak is not a jailbreak if it can’t run Cydia, even though Cydia has been abandoned for years now in favor of newer and better package managers.
In this article, we have a new package manager called PurePKG developed by @Lrdsnow, and this one, just like Sileo, is a modern alternative sporting some great and useful features.
What is PurePKG?
This is a new and modern iOS Package Manager designed to run on jailbroken devices. It allows you to manage your repos, search and download tweaks and themes, and it also comes with some amazing features such as the ability to install local DEB files/tweaks.
You can use this new package manager on various jailbreak tools, including RootHide Bootstrap and Serotonin Semi-Jailbreak which work on iOS 15 and iOS 16 on most devices.
A nice feature of this app is the option to install a specific version of a tweak, so if you have a tweak you use but the latest version is acting up, this new package manager allows you to downgrade to an older version that you know worked well.
The PurePKG project is also fully open-sourced under the GPL v3 license on GitHub, which means anybody can contribute, but it also means you can compile it yourself if you don’t trust the pre-compiled binaries.
In terms of usability, PurePKG resembles Sileo a lot more than it resembles Cydia. It’s modern-looking, installs tweaks fast, and supports modern repos with modern jailbreak paradigms such as Rootless Jailbreak, and RootHide Bootstrap.
Can I install PurePKG alongside Sileo or Zebra?
Yes, it is possible to install PurePKG but still keep your old package manager installed.
While PurePKG is in its early development stage and some bugs are to be expected, my tests indicate it’s pretty stable so far and there is no important feature missing from the app.
PurePKG seems to also support URI Schemes and Repo Signature checks, and it’s also highly customizable allowing the user to change the accent color, app icon, background color, etc.
You can definitely use PurePKG as your main package manager on Dopamine Jailbreak, PaleRa1n, RootHide Bootstrap, or Serotonin Semi-Jailbreak without much of an issue and you will likely not feel the need to go back to Zebra or Sileo for anything other than familiarity.
What iOS versions are supported?
This package manager is quite versatile. Since it supports both fully jailbroken devices (Dopamine, PaleRa1n, etc.) and also the new jailbreak alternatives such as Serotonin and RootHide Bootstrap, the support is quite large and spans across most modern iOS builds.
Here are the supported major iOS, tvOS, watchOS, macOS, and visionOS versions:
- iOS 17
- iOS 16
- iOS 15
- iOS 14
- tvOS 14.0+
- watchOS 8.0+
- macOS 13.0+
- visionOS 1.0+
For those of you who aren’t into complicated User Interfaces and prefer the simplicity of package managers like Cydia, there is a solution.
PurePKG offers the Basic UI Mode toggle in Settings which greatly simplifies the way the app looks, offering better navigation and improving accessibility.
