Rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are bringing about massive changes to modern society. While the integration of AI has always been predicted, many have been caught out by how quickly it has become so widely used and how much the tech industry is investing in developing the technology.

The New Scientist post Forget Superintelligence – We Need to Tackle ‘Stupid’ AI First reports how OpenAI is currently investing in a $500 billion initiative for ultrapowerful AI data centres.

There is much concern among industry experts that AI could soon evolve to become a superintelligence that far exceeds humanity’s ability to keep up or control it. As we noted in our piece on Understanding the Evolving Threat Landscape in Operational Technology, the world is increasingly connected and already faces an unprecedented barrage of cyber threats.

With AI being the new superintelligence, there is a very real concern that AI could become a threat to humanity. In this post, we will examine the evolution of AI, why AI is a superintelligence, and the key areas where it will surpass human intelligence.

The Evolution of Artificial Intelligence

The evolution of AI began in 1947 when the first groundwork for neural networks was developed in 1947 by Walter Pitts and Warren McCulloch, who created a computational model for neural network architecture.

AI was further explored by Alan Turing and his Turing test in 1950, with further developments and billions of dollars throughout the 20th century being invested in the technology. In the 21st century, the next stage was the personal assistants, such as Cortana, Siri, and Alexa, that could answer questions through natural language processing and perform tasks. In 2022, ChatGPT was released to the public and has become the most recognizable form of AI.

The Conversation’s discussion on What is AI Superintelligence explained how some AI applications today, such as DALL-E, might be at a virtuoso level because they can produce images that 99% of humans cannot draw or paint.

What Makes AI a Superintelligence

The classifications of AI range from artificial narrow intelligence (ANI) to Artificial superintelligence (ASI). What is Artificial Intelligence? by MongoDB describes artificial superintelligence as having the capability to “overpower humans in values and motives”.

The guide also outlines how “self-aware AIs and ASIs could raise problems with employment and ethics, for which researchers and governments need to be alert and form rules and guidelines.” An ASI would surpass human intelligence in all aspects, including creativity, problem-solving, and emotional understanding.

As a result, AI will be able to autonomously self-improve, learn from vast amounts of data, and generalize across diverse domains, potentially exceeding human capabilities in speed, accuracy, and insight.

While AI can currently perform tasks much faster than humans, it still relies on human input and queries to perform these tasks. ASIs would remove the human element from the decision-making process.

Where AI Surpasses Human Intelligence

AI has begun to surpass human intelligence in several key areas, and these developments mark the signs of artificial superintelligence. Unlike the limitations of human cognition, AI systems operate without fatigue and can process information with unmatched speed and precision.

In data-heavy environments, they can identify patterns and correlations that are invisible to even the most trained human minds. This advantage in computation extends beyond raw processing power; it includes the ability to learn and adapt from vast datasets, allowing AI to outperform humans in predictive analytics and decision-making.

In creative fields, generative models can compose music, write coherent prose, and generate artwork that is increasingly indistinguishable from human creations. In fields like medicine, AI has demonstrated greater diagnostic accuracy, and in financial markets, it outpaces human analysts in both speed and consistency.

These capabilities suggest that while AI may not yet replicate consciousness or self-awareness, its cognitive functions already rival and often exceed those of human intelligence in isolated domains.

As AI systems continue to evolve, the gap between human and machine performance will widen, paving the way for a future where artificial intelligence goes beyond simply being a tool.

With AI outperforming humans in many areas, there is no doubt that it is the new superintelligence. The only question is whether it will be used to solve the most pressing issues of humanity or cause it great harm.
