Driving can be unpredictable because no matter how careful you are, another driver can still cause an accident. However, there are a few safety precautions you can follow to prevent this from ever happening. Let’s get into it.

Defensive driving

Some may argue that defensive driving isn’t useful, but it can come in handy when you need to prevent accidents.

So how does it work, you need to be on guard all the time and expect the unexpected. police misconduct attorney Los Angeles experts often recommend maintaining a safe distance from other cars on the road. What qualifies as a safe distance?

Well, the answer depends on the weather conditions. If it is clear outside then you should be three seconds away. However, in the case of extreme weather, you should be more than six seconds away.

Look ahead

Your eyes should always be on the road. This means looking further in front to see everything that’s 15 seconds away. This way you can have time to react in case something is wrong in the front.

There can be traffic changes or even a pedestrian crossing the road. So it makes sense to look ahead and remain alert for any changes in front.

Check your surroundings

It isn’t enough to look ahead, you also need to be aware of your surroundings. This is why most cars have a mirror for the back and side mirrors for the sides.

You may not be able to see certain things because of blind spots in the front, but you should not miss them on the side mirrors. This could be a pedestrian crossing from the back of your car or children playing near the sides. Being alert allows you to predict any wrong move and prevent accidents.

Follow road signs

While this doesn’t need to be said, some people don’t believe the signs are important. For some roads, you may need to drive slower because of the sharp bends or a school is nearby. So always adhere to these rules.

It’s not always road signs, you may also need to follow vehicle signs. Some trucks often carry signs warning drivers to keep their distance. This is because heavy duty vehicles need more time to apply brakes.

Communicate

While you cannot speak from your car to communicate with other drivers, you can use your indicators and lights to speak. Use the appropriate indicators when you need to turn and don’t just do it abruptly.

Also, you can use your lights to flash those in front of you to inform them that you’re overtaking them. There are also hazard lights that you can use when the weather is poor. This prevents other drivers with poor visibility from running into you.

Avoid distractions

Stay away from anything that takes your eyes and mind off the road. This includes a mobile phone, phone call or iPads.

You can use your phone as a gps but it is recommended to place it in a safe spot instead of holding it and driving at the same time. It is also not ideal to eat or drink while driving because it can distract you from the road.
