Jailbreaking on iOS was born from the need to customize the device further from what Apple allows by default. With an iOS jailbreak, you trade your device’s security by staying on a lower vulnerable iOS version, for customizability and freedom to modify the device files the way you want.

Are iOS jailbreaks safe?

Mostly, yes. You do trade a bit of security because jailbreak tools are made using kernel vulnerabilities, and other iOS vulnerabilities combined into an app.

These vulnerabilities and exploits are necessary in order to allow tweaks and customizations to run. Apple doesn’t let users customize much of the device by default. In fact, Apple is known for imposing very draconic restrictions on what you can do with the device you paid for.

I am not sure why Apple believes I shouldn’t be able to customize the icons, fonts, animations, etc. of the device I paid a few thousand dollars for. This is exactly the spirit of jailbreaking – gaining back the freedom of installing what you want on your device, even at the risk of breaking something.

If you are careful what you modify/install, jailbreaks tend to be safe. Sure, you will be running an older iOS version than what is currently the latest, and you will run several iOS exploits to make the jailbreak work, so you should keep that in mind if you are security-focused.

We generally recommend jailbreaking only secondary devices.

Are iOS Jailbreak tools legal?

In the United States, jailbreaking an iPhone or any other iOS device was declared legal by the United States Copyright Office under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The exemption to the DMCA was granted in 2010 and was renewed every three years.

However, it’s essential to note that even though jailbreaking is generally legal in the US, it may still void your device’s warranty and could potentially lead to security and stability issues if not done carefully.

Apple has consistently advised against jailbreaking because it may introduce security vulnerabilities and other risks to the device. Jailbreaks do offer a lot of customization, but consider yourself warned about the potential drawbacks.
